Workplace Wellness in Hawaii
According to an article in the Pacific Business News, employees of Starwood Hotels and Resorts in Hawaii are offered some pretty nice incentives to stay healthy. One hundred dollars to participate in risk assessment and biometric screenings. Employees get a further $100 for losing ten pounds or enrolling in stress-management classes.
You would think it would be obvious for a resort to serve healthy food to their employees but this is now part of the plan. The thing I like best is the routine stretching classes. Couldn’t we all do with a stretch and relax class? The discounted gym memberships sound fine. But being a long-term gym member, I’ve seen the January effect all too often. Lots of people have good intentions but they fail to follow through.

A lot of the pacific island cultures don’t really look down on overweight individuals so I think that the employees and the resorts/hotels that are doing this really are making a difference in health. If I was paid to take a relaxation course…that would be amazing. I wish some places in California offered benefits like that!
